Itinerary
Early Morning Departure
Your journey begins with an early morning pick-up from your hotel in Kigali at 5:00 AM. The scenic drive to Kinigi, where the Volcanoes National Park headquarters are located, takes approximately 2-3 hours. Along the way, you’ll be captivated by Rwanda’s stunning mountainous countryside, earning it the title “The Land of a Thousand Hills.”
Briefing and Gorilla Trekking
Upon arrival at the park headquarters by 7:00 AM, you will attend a mandatory briefing session led by a head guide. Here, you’ll learn about the rules, safety guidelines, and trekking protocols. Once the briefing is complete, you’ll be assigned to a gorilla family group and set off into the forest, guided by experienced trackers.
The trek through the park’s diverse terrain—ranging from open grasslands to dense bamboo forests—can take anywhere from 1 to 4 hours, depending on the location of the gorilla family. When you finally encounter the gorillas, you will spend one magical hour observing them in their natural habitat. Watching the gorillas interact, play, and forage is an awe-inspiring experience. The playful juveniles, protective silverbacks, and nurturing mothers provide a captivating glimpse into their complex social structure.
Return to Kigali
After your time with the gorillas, you will descend from the forest and return to the park headquarters. Following a short rest, the journey back to Kigali begins. You will arrive in the late afternoon or early evening, with the option to be dropped off at your hotel or the airport if you have an evening flight.
