This 2-day safari offers an unforgettable experience in Akagera National Park, Rwanda’s premier savannah reserve. Located in the eastern part of the country, the park features a unique blend of savannah landscapes, woodlands, and wetlands. You’ll enjoy a thrilling game drive, a relaxing boat ride on Lake Ihema, and the chance to spot some of Africa’s iconic wildlife, including elephants, lions, giraffes, and hippos.

Itinerary

Your journey begins early with a pickup from your hotel in Kigali at around 6:30 AM. Enjoy a scenic 2.5-hour drive through Rwanda’s beautiful countryside, with rolling hills and rural villages along the way. Upon arrival at the park’s southern gate, you’ll check in and receive a brief orientation about Akagera’s history and conservation efforts.

In the afternoon, head to Lake Ihema, the park’s largest lake, for an exciting boat ride. This tranquil experience offers close encounters with hippos, crocodiles, and various bird species, including kingfishers, herons, and African fish eagles. Keep your camera ready, as the lake’s shores are bustling with wildlife, often including elephants and buffaloes coming to drink.

After the boat ride, return to your lodge or camp for relaxation and an overnight stay. Enjoy a traditional Rwandan dinner while sharing stories around the campfire.

Start your day with an early breakfast before embarking on a game drive at sunrise, the best time to spot animals. Akagera’s vast savannah plains are home to diverse wildlife, including the Big Five—lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, and rhinos. Look out for zebras, giraffes, impalas, and baboons as well. Your expert guide will share insights into the park’s ecosystems and animal behaviors.

The drive covers different sections of the park, from the open savannah to woodland areas, providing varied landscapes and numerous photographic opportunities. Around midday, you’ll exit the park and begin the return journey to Kigali. You’ll stop for lunch en route and have the chance to purchase souvenirs at a local craft market. Arrival in Kigali is expected around 4:00 PM.
